I worked with a player recently who was thinking too much in competition. He kept second-guessing himself and making changes while in the process of competing. Although he had proven ability in practice, he wasn't doing as well as he should have been in competition.
Recall for a moment the best you ever did in competition - did you succeed without thinking about it? I'll bet you did.
That's why we practice, so it gets so deeply ingrained that when it comes time to hit, throw, catch, race, run, etc., we can do it without thinking about it. Then, if we allow it, we can trust our skills, ability and potential under pressure. That is how you get the competitive edge and that's winning the mental game.
